National Women Physicians Day honors the first woman to receive a degree in medicine in the United States, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. She was born on February 3, 1821, in Bristol, England. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1832, and she eventually received a medical degree from Geneva Medical College, New York, in 1849. Her thesis was on Typhus Fever, and she graduated first in her class despite the difficulties of being the first woman.
National Women Physicians Day honors all the women who followed in Blackwell's footsteps, becoming doctors, scientists, and researchers in the decades and centuries ahead.
